Frequently Asked Questions

  • A root canal treatment (RCT) is necessary when the nerve tissue and blood vessels inside a tooth (the pulp) become infected or inflamed due to trauma or deep cavities. This procedure involves removing the infected pulp, cleaning and disinfecting the root canal, and filling it with a biocompatible material to save the tooth from extraction.

  • Contrary to common belief, root canal treatment does not cause pain; it relieves it. While there are rare instances where achieving complete anaesthesia is challenging, a well-trained dentist can manage the situation efficiently.

  • Sometimes, a root canal is necessary even if there is no pain. The disease process may have advanced slowly, causing enough damage to the pulp that it no longer transmits pain. Without treatment, the infection can continue to progress silently, potentially leading to tooth loss.

  • A tooth requiring a root canal often has significant structural damage. Additional tooth structure is removed during the procedure, making the tooth more susceptible to fractures. A crown encircles and reinforces the tooth, preventing fractures and extending its functional life.

  • In some cases, when a root canal is performed using minimal invasive techniques, such as with the assistance of an operating microscope, the amount of tooth structure removed is minimal. This can sometimes eliminate the need for a crown, preserving the natural tooth.

  • Not all teeth can be saved with a root canal. The decision to restore or extract a tooth depends on its condition and the dentist's foresight. Using magnification, hidden issues that may lead to failure can be identified, allowing for better assessment and treatment.

  • If performed correctly and following strict protocols, especially under a microscope, a root canal-treated tooth can last a very long time. The success of the procedure largely depends on the dentist's skill and adherence to precise techniques.
